Looking Back
ON PAINTING BIRDS
I have had a longtime love and fascination for birds. Whether flashing past my studio window, or soaring above me in the sky, there is something otherworldly about these creatures to me.
I am most intrigued by the small things—light on feathers, the turn of a head, patterns in a wing. The slow process of defining these subtle details allows me to get deeply involved with each painting.
I focus on the birds here in Northern California—ones I can see, know and study up close. I feel a connection to my subjects through painting them, and I try to render each one’s essence in my work.
